Vettel tops final practice session

Sebastian Vettel has topped the time-sheets for Ferrari in the final practice session before qualifying in an hours time at the Monaco Grand Prix.

After having a difficult Thursday, Sebastian Vettel put his Ferrari on top of the time-sheets in the final practice session with a 1:14.650 on the purple-branded ultra-soft compounds and was 0.018 seconds faster than the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.

 

In a drama-filled session, the top four were covered by just 0.157 seconds with the other Mercedes of Nico Rosberg taking third and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in fourth.

 

Hamilton came close to setting the fastest time in the session after setting purple times in the first two sectors before encountering traffic at the entry of La Rascasse and was forced to back off.

 

Red Bull’s Spanish Grand Prix winner Max Verstappen completed the top five but when on a flying lap the young Dutchman locked his rear tyres and went into the barriers as he came through Massenet heading into Casino Square.

 

Toro Rosso are continuing to be the surprise package this weekend on the streets of Monte Carlo as once again both cars made it into the top ten with Daniil Kvyat in sixth place and ahead of team-mate Carlos Sainz in seventh.

 

Force India’s Sergio Pérez finished eighth, with the other Ferrari of Kimi Räikkönen struggling in ninth and the other Force India of Nico Hulkenberg rounding out the top 10.

 

Williams and McLaren claimed the next four positions, with Felipe Massa outside the top ten in 11th just ahead of Fernando Alonso in 12th place, meanwhile Jenson Button took 13th and in-front of Valtteri Bottas who was 14th.

 

Haas drivers Esteban Gutiérrez and Romain Grosjean sandwiched the Renault of Kevin Magnussen who was 16th.

 

The Sauber pairing of Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson took 18th and 19th places respectively.

 

Jolyon Palmer suffered yet another tough session in his Renault RS16 racer as he spun at the swimming pool complex and slid into the wall damaging his rear wing in the process which left the Briton in the pits for most of the session.

 

The Manor duo of Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto were once again at the rear and during the session saw Haryanto hold his team-mate up a couple of times.
