For the second time this season, young Adelaide Crows defender, Rory Laird, has earned Fiasco Sports selection for South Australian Footballer of the Week.
In Adelaide’s Round 17 clash with the Gold Coast Suns, Rory Laird was instrumental in helping the Crows record a convincing 45 point victory.
Laird collected 32 disposals from the half-back flank to go along with 7 marks, which included a number of intercepts grabs.
The ability to fly across the front of a pack and take intercept marks has perhaps become the most pleasing aspect of Laird’s game, particularly since he only stands at 177cm tall.
Averaging 24 disposals a game this season, Laird is starting to earn the respect of the wider media including selection in to Essendon legend, Matthew Lloyd’s rolling All-Australian team on the Sunday Footy Show.
“Some will say who is Rory Laird? Well his numbers have been phenomenal all year,” said Lloyd.
Along with possible All-Australian honours, some people are suggesting he is also a chance to snatch the Crows’ best and fairest from strong favourite Patrick Dangerfield.
The most pleasing fact about all this recognition for Crows fans might be that Laird is preparing to play just his 50th game this week against the Sydney Swans.
Laird will celebrate the milestone alongside skipper Taylor Walker, who plays his 100th game, and the young defender says he is more than happy for the Crows captain to take the limelight.
“I’m pretty happy it’s his 100th, I think it overshadows my 50 which is really nice, maybe more media attention on him and not me which would be good,” said Laird.
