There have been Irish, Japanese and French horses win the Melbourne Cup and now a German horse by the name of Protectionist has joined the famous winners list.
A great ride from English jockey Ryan Moore put the horse in a perfect position and then an amazing turn of speed saw it blitz the rest of the field on the final straight.
The horse put itself into Melbourne Cup contention with a very strong performance in the Herbert Power Stakes at Caufield.
In what can only be an incredibly frustrating time for its connections Red Cadeaux finished second for the third time in its four appearances in the race that stops the nation.
On a sour note the aftermath of the race was marred by the sudden death of pre-race favourite and Caufield Cup winner Admire Rakti.
